Overview

Sanyati Holdings Limited is one of South Africa’s leading black-empowered, JSE-listed engineering and construction firms.  Our unique and value-filled approach goes beyond the best of breed delivery of the project at hand to ensure that we leave a lasting legacy in the communities that we operate in.  Wherever possible, we ensure that we partner and enable the development of local construction businesses, up-skill and employ local community members, procure from local suppliers, and leave our trademark social investment projects to make a difference to the people of every region in which we work.  Our regionally focused businesses are found throughout South Africa , and we committed to replicating this model as we expand our activities into the rest of Africa. 

We deliver on-time, on-budget, quality construction and engineering solutions from a diverse range of stand-alone or integrated capabilities depending on the needs of each project.  These include road construction and rehabilitation, mining infrastructure, piling and geotechnical, bulk earthworks, railway construction and electrification, telecom infrastructure, sliding and slipform construction, building and pipeline installation.

Building Regions

As urbanisation and globalisation fuels a growing construction industry, a growing number of roads, buildings, telecom cables, water systems, bridges, railways and mines need to be built.

In our view, too many construction ‘raiders’ with only their own commercial interests at heart enter into regions, provinces or countries, finish a project and then leave as quickly as they arrived with their  profits destined for other places.  The local community is left with the infrastructure output, but little else.  The communities that foot the infrastructure bill miss out on opportunities for maximum job creation and skills transfer, permanent enterprise development, the multiplier effect of local procurement, a permanent contribution to regional tax bases, and last but not least, a commitment to local social investment.  And this argument holds whether the contracting party is from the public or the private sector.  This opportunistic ‘raider’ approach will most likely not achieve the broad ambitions of leveraging project spend for the benefit of local stakeholders.

The goal of our regional approach is therefore to provide non-negotiable, cost effective, infrastructural improvements but at the same time to contribute wherever possible to a lasting and positive impact on the businesses and people of the region.

Why regionalisation is a good idea

Sanyati is in effect a group of strong regionally based construction and civil engineering companies, linked by a binding philosophy and a compelling business model  that has at its core, the belief that every project we undertake provides us with a unique opportunity to enrich the communities we serve.

We believe that when working in a region, it is our duty to develop and add value to the region as much as it is our obligation to deliver quality work.  It is as important for our own sustainability to empower the people and the companies within the regions in which we operate, as it is our obligation to earn a return for our shareholders.

Of course our work needs to be on time and on budget, and we take pride in our technical ability to complete quality, low-risk construction and engineering projects.   But, the reason we add value beyond our technical excellence, is that we embrace the need to leverage the project spend for the benefit of the immediate community and regional stakeholders.

Our underlying aim is to retain the project spend within the region.  We recognise that by doing this, we support the drive to benefit regional tax bases, create much needed employment opportunities, develop and transfer skills and bring permanent capital into the region.  Our approach is a direct response to a growing demand and expectation from our clients (both public and private alike) that we support their enterprise development and job creation objectives.  We know that if we identify the opportunities in our engagement we can create long term benefit as the region recognises us as good corporate citizens.

As our integrated business model indicates, it is our tegional approach that really adds value to the work we do.  Regional empowerment is an integral part of our being and aligns with all governments,  municipalities and private businesses that are looking to leave a legacy beyond the bridge, dam or road we have been commissioned to build.

There are five ways in which we enrich local communities as we carry out each and every project:

• We masimise levels of regional procurement
• We engage with community leadership to jointly identify job and skills transfer opportunities
