He was involved with the Bridge Design Department where he designed reinforced concrete structures including culverts, road over rail bridges, multi-span prestressed bridges as well as steel pedestrian bridges. Gerhard was also the resident engineer on the rehabilitation of a multi-span concrete bridge across the Omaruru River just North of Henties Bay in Namibia. In 1993 he moved to Lonerock Construction as a site agent and worked on various projects including the Roodepoort Athletics Stadium. Gerhard joined Protech Construction in 1996, starting as Contract Manager. He was then promoted to Contracts Director in February 1997 and finally became Managing Director in 1999, a position which he held for 4 years. Gerhard was responsible for managing all contracts, mainly road building contracts in South Africa as well as contracts in Botswana, Mozambique and Ethiopia. In 2003 Gerhard started his own company, Gem Earthworks. Here, he and his team managed contracts in Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Eastern Cape, as well as a plant fleet which consisted of specialised road building equipment like recycling machines, crushers, graders and rollers. In addition, Gerhard was also involved with two projects for a Kuwaitan company, MA Kharaffi, in The Gambia and Tanzania. The value of the contracts were US50M and US60M respectively. Sanyati Holdings acquired Gem Earthworks in 2007 and and this business has subsequently been incorporated in Sanyati North. Gerhard is currently driving the Group's geographical diversification strategy into the rest of Africa as well as creating new opportunities for Sanyati North in partnership with Ian Ferguson.
